Signal 2: The "In today's fast-paced world..." opener
Seven variants of this exist. All of them are tells. "In today's fast-paced world." "In the rapidly evolving landscape of." "As we navigate an increasingly complex." Every AI-generated opener that needs context-setting reaches for this phrasing family because it is low-risk — the model cannot be wrong if it is generic.
Before (AI-sounding): "In today's fast-paced world, content marketing has become more important than ever. With the rapidly evolving landscape of social media, brands must adapt."
After (human-sounding): "I spent 6 hours on Sunday turning one podcast episode into 15 posts. Here is what I learned about which ones performed and which ones flopped."
The human opener starts with a specific detail — a number, a name, a concrete scene. The AI opener starts with abstraction because abstraction is safe. Audiences have pattern-matched this since 2023.
Signal 3: The rhetorical question with a guaranteed answer
Most AI-generated posts open with a rhetorical question that has an obvious yes/no answer. "Tired of spending hours on content?" "Ever wondered what separates great creators from the rest?" "Struggling with consistency on LinkedIn?" The question is a stall. The model uses it because humans do sometimes open with questions, but the model does not know which questions are interesting.
Before (AI-sounding): "Struggling to come up with fresh content ideas? You are not alone. Here are 5 tips to help you break through creative blocks."
After (human-sounding): "I tried 5 different content brainstorming methods last quarter. Three of them wasted my time. One doubled my posting cadence. Here is the one that worked."
The human version replaces the rhetorical question with a declarative claim plus a specific number. The claim does the hooking work the question was trying to do, but more directly.
Signal 4: The "comprehensive" reflex
When a language model wants to flatter the topic, it reaches for a small vocabulary of universal positive modifiers: comprehensive, robust, seamless, holistic, transformative, powerful, game-changing. These words signal "I am being thorough" in training data, so the model uses them as credibility decoration.
Before (AI-sounding): "Our comprehensive solution provides a robust, seamless integration for a holistic content strategy."
After (human-sounding): "Our tool turns one podcast into 15 LinkedIn posts in 90 minutes. One person, one tool, no extra integrations."
Human writing is specific about what the thing does. AI writing decorates what the thing claims to be. If a sentence loses nothing when you cut every adjective, the adjectives were doing AI work.
Signal 5: Symmetrical sentence rhythm
Humans write with broken rhythm. Long sentence. Short. Then medium. Then a fragment. AI writes with symmetrical rhythm — similar sentence lengths, similar clause structures, similar cadence across paragraphs. Read three AI-generated paragraphs aloud and you can feel the rhythm repeating itself.
Before (AI-sounding): "Content creation is important. Content distribution is also important. Both require consistent effort. Both benefit from automation. Both impact your audience growth."
After (human-sounding): "Content creation matters. But distribution matters more. Most creators spend 90% of their time on the first and 10% on the second, then wonder why no one reads. Fix the ratio."
The rhythm fix is mechanical: read your post aloud. Where the cadence is symmetrical for more than three sentences, break one of them. Cut a clause. Add a fragment. The broken rhythm is human.
Signal 6: The enthusiasm gradient
AI-generated content has a narrow emotional range. It is either neutral or enthusiastic-with-exclamation-marks. There is rarely a middle register — dry, wry, mildly irritated, quietly confident without being pumped. Real humans spend most of their writing in the middle register.
Before (AI-sounding): "This is an incredible tool that will absolutely transform your content game! Get ready to see amazing results with minimal effort!"
After (human-sounding): "This tool is useful for one specific workflow. It is not magic. But for that workflow, it saves me 5 hours a week, and after three months I do not think I could go back."
The human version is confident without being salesy. It names a specific value and a specific time horizon. AI writing defaults to "amazing" because amazing is the safest positive register in training data.
Signal 7: The hedged confidence
When the model does not want to be wrong but also wants to sound authoritative, it hedges. "Generally speaking, this is often considered one of the most effective approaches." "Typically, most marketers find that..." "While there are many factors, it can be said that..."
Before (AI-sounding): "Generally speaking, content repurposing is typically considered one of the most effective strategies for most content creators."
After (human-sounding): "Content repurposing works. It is not a strategy for every creator — if your audience is on one platform only, it is overkill. But for multi-platform creators, it is the difference between posting twice a month and posting daily."
Human writing takes a position or explicitly declines to. AI writing hedges both directions simultaneously. If every sentence feels technically correct but says nothing specific, you are reading an AI hedge.
